10 to 11 a.m.

DESCRIPTION

This course will review the process of transitioning from traditional style hard hats to safety helmets that meet the Class II or EN 12492 ratings. Discussion items will include why the change was necessary, the challenges encountered throughout the transition process and where we’re heading with helmets.

What are the characteristics of a good Safety Leader and what are some of the traps to watch out for when managing safety? Knowledge, skills and leadership are fundamental in managing an effective contractor safety program.

This session will review proper communication techniques in addition to identifying how to motivate employees to do the right thing, defining who is a safety professional and safety leader today.

What’s a fleet? Your company operates a fleet whenever an employee drives a vehicle or machine for work-related purposes. But like a broken record, over and over, vehicle crashes continue to be the most common work-related fatality each year. Simply put, fleet safety programs are ineffective unless they include technology, verification, and validation. This session reviews safety policy, verification & validation practices, and how technology can provide real-time information on the most dangerous task your employees do – drive a vehicle.

Andrew Brought and Paul Jacobson are OSHA defense attorneys with Spencer Fane LLP. Andrew and Paul work closely with construction contractors, manufacturers, and other industrial operators on managing all aspects of risk avoidance and liability in workplace safety, health, and environmental matters. Given their extensive experience in defending OSHA inspections and citations, including high-profile fatality and crisis situations, Andrew and Paul will discuss best practices and practical considerations regarding OSHA inspections. In addition to addressing OSHA protocols, Andrew and Paul will highlight OSHA’s current enforcement priorities and major initiatives by the Biden Administration.

Employers make significant investments in medical compliance. Unfortunately, many of them fail to manage their programs effectively, resulting in widespread failure to identify, reduce or eliminate hazards before serious damage is done to their employees, or until serious liability occurs. One of the most basic things to be aware of is the difference between medical surveillance and medical screening programs. Terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a distinct difference that is frequently misunderstood. This session will lay out the components of both and help you to better understand how each is used. Additionally, this will help to identify the components which you may be responsible for, as well as those that may serve as a resource for you.

Join Dr. Snyder, Committee Chair of the ANSI/ASSP Z490 Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health, and Environmental Training standard as he discusses guidance for using the standard to develop training for adult learners. This session will include how to apply adult learning principles to your training programs to ensure that learners are not only motivated and engaged in training, but also retain learning to be transferred on the job.

This presentation will describe lifestyle and mental health concerns that specifically impact construction workers and how to partner with an employee assistance program (EAP) to address employee's needs to provide a safer workforce and retain employees. Additionally, the program will identify mental health risks and how to get help for employees.

This session will include a panel discussion of timely topics on local and national levels in the construction safety and health field. Attendees will be given opportunities to ask questions of industry experts.

To combat these challenges, the Turner Safety and Wellness Team has implemented Active Caring and Whole-Body Wellness initiatives. This session is an in-depth explanation of the workers compensation experience rating. Instructors from Missouri Employers Mutual will review the NCCI e-mod worksheet in a step-by-step fashion – defining terms, calculations and explaining the purpose of each worksheet column. The NCCI document “ABCs of Experience Rating” will be reviewed as part of this session. Specifically geared toward construction companies, important cost-savings information will be discussed, to include the importance of light duty programs, med-only claims, company-directed medical, and carrier cost-savings programs.
